The Centre for Information Policy Leadership (“CIPL”) at Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP is pleased to announce Matthew Starr and Giovanna Carloni have joined CIPL, adding to its expertise in global privacy and data protection policy.

Matthew Starr joins CIPL as Global Privacy and Public Policy Manager. In this role, Starr will work on global data protection, privacy and artificial intelligence initiatives. One of his primary areas of focus will be CIPL’s US Privacy Framework project, and helping CIPL bring to bear its unique global perspective and experience on the US privacy law development process. Starr will be resident in CIPL’s Washington DC office.

Starr joins CIPL from CompTIA (Computing Technology Industry Association), a leading information technology trade association, where he was Senior Director, Public Advocacy and responsible for founding CompTIA’s Federal Privacy and Telecom & Broadband Committees and working with its member companies to develop policy positions on a number of issues related to privacy legislation.

Giovanna Carloni joins CIPL as Global Privacy Policy Manager. In this role, Carloni will support CIPL’s projects such as the Accountability project and help monitor and analyze legislative and privacy developments around the world, with a focus on Europe and Latin America. She will also help manage CIPL’s project on Brazilian Data Protection Implementation and Effective Regulation. Carloni will be resident in CIPL’s London office.

Carloni joins CIPL from Promontory Financial Group, an IBM Company, where she was a Data Privacy Associate working on GDPR readiness assessment and implementation for four years. During this period, she was seconded twice. First, to a major UK retailer to the position of Privacy and Data Governance Officer and, second, to a global social media and tech company on its EMEA Privacy Policy Team.

Speaking of the new additions, CIPL President Bojana Bellamy remarked, “I am very excited that with the addition of Matt and Giovanna, CIPL will be in a position to further increase its global presence, respond to the increasing needs and demands from our growing list of members and focus on key hot topics in privacy, namely US legislative reform and the effective implementation of Brazil’s new data protection law.”
