During the M&A Advisor’s 9th Annual International M&A Awards, Hunton & Williams LLP was recognized with The Corporate/Strategic Deal of the Year, for its corporate team’s representation of Promerica Financial Corp. in its acquisition of Banco Citibank de Guatemala, S.A. and affiliate Cititarjetas de Guatemala Limitada.

“The transaction was transformational for Promerica, and it is gratifying to have the work of our team for our clients validated,” said Fernando C. Alonso, chairman of the firm’s Latin American practice group. “We are honored to receive this award from M&A Advisor.”
The acquisition increased Promerica’s market share and provided a stronger foothold in the credit card business in Central America. The firm also advised Promerica in obtaining a syndicated credit facility to fund a portion of the acquisition. The successful financing was particularly complex given the number of jurisdictions involved.

Fernando C. Alonso and Fernando Margarit, in Miami, and David R. Yates, in Atlanta, led the team representing Promerica. Additional members included Miami lawyers Carlos Garcia (for financing only), Stefano D’Aniello, Rail Seoane and B. Cary Tolley III; Mark A. Melton in Dallas; and Eric J. Hanson in Atlanta.

Hunton & Williams has an established and diverse banking practice, consisting of lawyers and consultants who regularly represent global financial institutions operating in the United States and internationally.
