NEW YORK — May 1, 2014 — Hunton & Williams LLP announces the firm will receive the 2014 Distinguished Legal Writing Award from The Burton Foundation for an article coauthored by partners Terence G. Connor and Kevin J. White, “The Consideration of Arrest and Conviction Records in Employment Decisions: A Critique of the EEOC Guidance,” published in the June 2013 issue of Seton Hall Law Review. In the article, Connor and White examine whether an employer’s consideration of criminal history should be subject to challenge through claims of racially discriminatory impact under the civil rights laws even though the employer uniformly considers the criminal history of all applicants and applies its judgments similarly among protected groups.

Hunton partner Lucas Bergkamp also will receive the Distinguished Legal Writing Award for a December 2013 article he coauthored with Lawrence A. Kogan, nominated by The Kogan Law Group PC. “Trade, the Precautionary Principle, and Post-Modern Regulatory Process” was published by The European Journal of Risk Regulation. The firm also received Distinguished Legal Writing Awards from the foundation in 2012 and 2010.

“We are very proud of the recognition received by Terry, Kevin and Lucas for their thought leadership and commend them and all of the Burton Foundation honorees for their contributions to the profession,” said Wally Martinez, Hunton & Williams managing partner.

In addition to the law firm honorees, The Burton Foundation will present Chief Judge Robert A. Katzmann of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit with the “Reform in Law Award” for his work with the Immigrant Justice Corps project.

The Burton Foundation is a nonprofit volunteer, academic organization concentrating on legal writing. In association with the US Library of Congress and its Law Library, the foundation recognizes excellence in legal writing each year by selecting only 30 law firms from 1,000 entries submitted by the nation’s largest and most prestigious law firms.
