Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP announced that it will be hosting Legal Services of Greater Miami (“LSGMI”) Young Professionals Council’s Conversations with Leaders featuring Markenzy Lapointe, US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. The event will be held on Thursday, November 9th at 333 SE 2nd Avenue, Suite 2400 at 6:00 p.m. Andrea Guzman, an associate at DLA Piper, will moderate the event.

The LSGMI Young Professionals Council is a group of professionals with diverse backgrounds and careers who are dedicated to Legal Services’ mission of providing high-quality, free civil legal services to low-income individuals and families in Miami Dade and Monroe counties.

“We are proud to be hosting this segment of Conversations with Leaders,” said Jamie Zysk Isani, partner at Hunton Andrews Kurth and the Miami office’s pro bono committee head. “Mark has an inspiring background, including immigrating from Haiti to the US as a teenager and serving in the US Marines before becoming a lawyer. We know this will be a terrific event to get his insights on topics affecting our community.”

Nominated by President Joe Biden, Lapointe leads an office of nearly 500 attorneys and support professionals responsible for investigating and prosecuting federal crimes in South Florida and litigating civil matters in which the US has an interest.

He began his legal career with the Florida Supreme Court, where he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Harry Lee Anstead from 1999 to 2001. He went on to serve as an assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida from 2002 to 2006, handling federal criminal matters that ranged from narcotics and firearms’ crimes to bank and mortgage fraud. Lapointe worked as a litigation associate, and later partner, for the Miami office of Boies Schiller Flexner LLP from 2006 to 2017. After that, he joined Pillsbury as a partner.

Lapointe is a US Marine and Gulf War veteran and is the first Haitian-born American lawyer to serve as US Attorney. Throughout his career, he has maintained a notable pro bono practice. He received the Legal Aid/Put Something Back Pro Bono Award in Child Advocacy and the Daily Business Review’s Most Effective Lawyer Award for Pro Bono in Family Law.
