The Centre for Information Policy Leadership (CIPL), a global privacy and data policy think tank founded in 2001 by leading companies and Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, has announced the appointment of Matthew Reisman as CIPL’s new U.S. Director of Privacy and Data Policy. Reisman will serve in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office to further CIPL’s U.S. and global privacy, data and digital policy agenda.

Prior to joining CIPL, Reisman served as a Director of Global Privacy Policy at Microsoft, where he helped shape the company’s advocacy on privacy and data policy, including at the intersections of security, digital safety, trade, data governance and trustworthy cross-border data flows. In a previous role as Microsoft’s Director of International Trade Policy, he led Microsoft’s advocacy on trade, including trade-related aspects of data protection, emerging technologies such as 5G and AI, export controls, supply chain security, cybersecurity and more inclusive approaches to trade. Across these roles, Reisman drove Microsoft’s engagement with policymakers, the business community and civil society and partnered closely with Microsoft field teams in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

In addition, Reisman previously led research on the digital economy for Congress, the Executive Branch and the public as a civil servant at the United States International Trade Commission. He also served as an advisor to emerging economies on international trade and investment policy through programs funded by the United States Agency for International Development and the World Bank.

At CIPL, Reisman will advance CIPL’s work on a wide range of data policy-related topics, including privacy and data protection, data governance, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, both in the U.S. and globally. Reisman will also work closely with CIPL’s international privacy team based in CIPL’s offices in London, Brussels and Washington, D.C.

“I am thrilled to welcome such a distinguished and well-versed new colleague,” said Bojana Bellamy, President of CIPL. “Matthew’s knowledge of the industry, the global digital economy, and the ever-changing world of data privacy will significantly help us advance our mission, both in the US and globally.”

Commenting on his new role, Reisman said: “I am honored to join CIPL’s accomplished team and thrilled to have this opportunity to help advance a wide range of policy initiatives relating to the responsible use of data.”
